Cashing benefits of automated train operation requires more than tech developments – Interview with Alfons Schaafsma, ProRail
Alfons Schaafsma is Advisor Innovation and Development at ProRail. He will speak about Automated Train Operation – an important building block for modern railways during the Cargo Innovation Conference, which will take place on Jun 07, 2018, at Maaspoort, Venlo, The Netherlands.
What drives you?
I have been working in the railway industry for more than 30 years. The need to modernize is maybe more evident than has ever been. The demands e.g. sustainability, facilitating the growth of mobility, increase, while competing modes are innovating fast.
What emerging technologies/trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?
Digitalization of train operation
What kind of impact do you expect them to have?
Digitalization of train operation may contribute to more punctuality, a better use of infrastructure capacity, less energy consumption and a more flexible deployment of assets.
What are the barriers that might stand in the way?
A dominant focus on technology, while underestimating the human factor and, legislation issues etc.
What do you hope people to learn from your presentation?
Digitalization is important for the railway industry. Automated train operation has many potential benefits but cashing these benefits requires more than technological developments
