Smaller unmanned ships attractive & environmentally friendly – Interview with Ørnulf Jan Rødseth, SINTEF Ocean
Ørnulf Jan Rødseth is Senior Scientist at SINTEF Ocean in Trondheim, Norway and studies the development of transport over water with small unmanned ships. In his view, smaller unmanned ships are more economical and also environmentally friendly. He will talk at the Unmanned Cargo Ship Conference on June 13, 2017, in Venlo, The Netherlands.
“Bigger ships are more economical, simply because of their more efficient use of fuel and smaller crews required. But this has a limit as they have a draught that limits their possibilities in shallow waters,” according to Ørnulf Jan Rødseth, senior scientist at SINTEF Ocean in Trondheim, Norway. “Trondheim is the centre of a national project on testing fully or partial unmanned ships. Fully automated and smaller ships allow far more flexible transport systems. On top of that the smaller ships can be cleaner for the environment, as they make use of batteries or fuel cells. An italian experience for the next ‘jump’ of Unmanned surface vessel (USV) technologies towards commercial shipping – Presented by Cristiana Pagni, Consorzio Tecnomar Liguria at the Unmanned Cargo Ship Conference, which takes place on June 13, 2017, at Maaspoort, Venlo, The Netherlands.
Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) are widely employed for both military and civil applications (e.g. costal raids, mine search and rescue, research activities related to sea and littoral investigations, etc.). Within the USV PERMARE, ProDifCon and SWAD Projects (supported by Distretto Ligure delle Tecnologie Marine (DTLM) funded by the Ministry of Education and Research – MIUR, grants DM62573, DM62574 and DM62572- with a public-private partnership of SMEs, BE and Research centres) effectiveness and efficiency (e.g. environmentally-friendly performances, maximum operative range and endurance as well as detection performances) of such vehicles have been largely improved, in terms of reliability and compactness, of hybrid and/or fully electric propulsion systems, of real-time and remote accessible on-board monitoring systems and high range/bandwidth transmission data devices.

The Department of Maritime and Transport Technology of TU Delft is carrying out research on autonomous vessels, which can potentially solve some increasing problems in transportation, such as latency, traffic in port areas and high costs. Unmanned ship transport systems in Norway – Presented by Ørnulf Jan Rødseth, SINTEF Ocean at the Unmanned Cargo Ship Conference, which takes place on June 13, 2017, at Maaspoort, Venlo, The Netherlands.
Norway has a long coast and sparse population. It is a priority to increase utilization of seaways and decrease road transport. Trucks are, however, more flexible than ships. Economic benefits of ship transport traditionally increase with ship size, which reduce flexibility. Unmanned ships can change this. Automated operation allows smaller ships in more flexible transport systems. Smaller ships also makes use of zero-emission technologies, such as batteries, easier. However, the ships has to be integrated into the full transport system and the “last mile” from quay to user has to be addressed. Several use cases will be presented and discussed.
